Wedding dance lessons in Cambridge, built round an impossible diary.
Private first dance lessons for the two of you, in whatever hour you can actually protect. Your instructor travels to the address you give us. There is no term to enrol on and no group to hide at the back of, which is just as well, because there is no back.

Put a Cambridge first dance in the calendar.
Six boxes. Nothing you need to look up, nothing you need to have decided. Somebody reads it properly and then rings you, because a two-minute conversation settles more than a week of e-mail ever does.

01 · Cambridge weddings
Cambridge couples plan a wedding like a project.
Spreadsheets, colour-coded columns, a shared calendar with four people's leave on it. The first dance is usually the last row to get filled in, partly because nobody knows what to put in the cell. This page is the answer to that cell.
Term-shaped years, wedding-shaped weekends.
Cambridge runs on other people's timetables: term dates, lab bookings, sprint reviews, conference season, a July that empties and a September that fills. Couples here rarely have a free Tuesday six weeks running, and we have stopped expecting them to.
Dates that move without a penalty.
So lessons are booked one or two at a time, shuffled when a week collapses, and stacked closer together when a quiet fortnight appears. The plan bends. The price does not change when it bends.
02 · Your instructor
Who actually turns up in Cambridge.
You are matched with an instructor who already covers this part of Cambridgeshire, knows how long it takes to cross town at half past five, and does not need directions to a village hall in the fens.
Whoever you get, the working method is the same. They listen to your song before they choreograph a step. They watch how the two of you move when you are not trying, then build from that rather than from a syllabus. Nothing is lifted off a previous couple's routine, because we do not keep one to lift from.
You keep the same instructor from the first lesson to the last, so nobody has to be told twice about the shoulder that does not rotate or the song you have already vetoed.
03 · Cambridge prices
Five packages, all of them printed here.
These are the national prices and they apply in Cambridge exactly as written. Per couple, not per person. There is no city loading and no asterisk hiding behind the word ‘from’.
Single Lesson£75One lesson
Sixty minutes, booked once, at an address in Cambridge you choose
Enough to find out whether any of this is as bad as you feared
You leave with a beginning, and an honest view on what else you need
Each figure covers both of you and includes your instructor coming to the floor you have chosen. If you finish the block and want two more lessons, you buy two more lessons; nothing has to be bought up front.
Everything else on the list took months. This bit takes a form.
Every lesson is private and happens on a floor near you. Three arrangements work, and plenty of Cambridge couples use two of them across a single block.
At home
Victorian terraces off Mill Road, new-builds in Eddington, houses in Trumpington and Cherry Hinton with a kitchen-diner that clears in a minute. If two of you can stand and turn without hitting the dresser, that is a floor.
At the venue
Some venues will hand over the room for an hour midweek. If yours will, spend a lesson there late in the block: the same boards, the same doorway you walk in through, the same distance to the far wall.
On a hired floor
When home is short of space, we take a room for the hour somewhere convenient for you. Which room depends on your side of the city and what is free that evening; it is settled at booking, not left vague.

Plenty of couples here want nothing that could be described as choreography. Good news: the difference between an awkward shuffle and a lovely, low-key dance is about four decisions — where you stand, how you start moving, one change of direction, and an ending that does not trail off. That is the whole brief, and it fits comfortably in three lessons.
Small does not mean unrehearsed.
The minimal version still has to survive a hundred faces and a dress you have never moved in. So we rehearse the plain thing until it is boring, which is exactly the state you want it in on the day. Boring in the front room reads as relaxed on the floor.
Local and practical only. The wider questions have their own answers over on the main page.
We want to sway, not perform. Is that too small a job for a Cambridge instructor?
Not remotely, and it is a real skill to teach. A sway with a shape to it needs an agreed start, one clear change of direction, a way of holding each other that looks fond rather than braced, and a finish. Three lessons is usually plenty, and the result reads as understated rather than as giving up.
Our diaries are chaos. Can lesson dates move about from week to week?
Yes, and most Cambridge couples need them to. Lessons are arranged one or two ahead rather than as a fixed weekly slot, so a cancelled evening moves rather than evaporates. We only ask for as much warning as you can reasonably give.
We both commute out of Cambridge. How late in the evening can a lesson start?
Later than you probably expect. Evening starts are the normal shape of the week for us, and instructors are used to couples arriving home, eating something standing up and dancing forty minutes later. Give us your realistic time on the enquiry form rather than your optimistic one.
We live in Cambridge but the wedding is out towards Ely. Does that complicate it?
No. Lessons happen where it suits you to learn, which for most couples is home, and the venue is only relevant if you want a session on its floor. Living one side of the county and marrying the other is ordinary here.
Can we book the whole block now and fix the dates months ahead?
You can, if certainty is what calms you down. Some couples want all five dates written into the calendar in one sitting; others want to keep it loose. Either works, and switching between the two mid-block is not a problem.
How much are we expected to practise between lessons?
Ten unglamorous minutes now and again beats an hour the night before. If you do nothing at all, the lesson simply starts with a recap and you lose a little ground. Nobody is marked, and nobody is asked.
