Send us your Nottingham date and your track.

If you know the song, put it in. If you have three and cannot choose, put all three in. Either way somebody rings you to talk it over properly rather than mailing you a brochure.

No song yet? That is genuinely fine, and it is the thing we are most often asked about. The packages are below in the meantime.

01 · Nottingham weddings

The room you booked will change how your song sounds.

A track that felt right in the car does something else entirely in a brick warehouse off the Lace Market, in a carpeted hotel suite, or under canvas in a field near Southwell. Bare brick throws the beat back at you half a second late; heavy carpet and low ceilings swallow the bottom end. Both are workable once somebody has thought about it.

Live band or recorded track

Plenty of Nottingham couples have a band playing the first dance rather than a DJ, and a live version is rarely the tempo you rehearsed to. Ask the band for a recording of how they play it, or agree a count with them early. Your instructor can then teach the version you will actually hear.

Where the good ninety seconds sit

Most songs have one stretch that carries a dance and a couple of minutes that do not. Working out where that stretch begins and ends is half of the first lesson, and it usually settles the argument about whether the whole track has to be played.

02 · Your instructor

The person who will hear your song a hundred times.

You are matched with an instructor who teaches in this part of Nottinghamshire and has your run-up free. No auditions, no waiting list, no allocation by studio timetable, because there is no studio timetable.

Choreography here is written by the person teaching it, from your recording, in the space you will be dancing in. That matters more with music than people expect: two couples can bring the same ballad and end up with entirely different dances, because one wants to move on the vocal and the other cannot hear anything but the drums.

If your track has an awkward middle, a key change or a long instrumental nobody knows what to do with, say so at the first lesson. Those are the interesting problems, and solving them is most of the job.

04 · Where in Nottingham

Somewhere with a plug socket and a bit of floor.

Wherever the lesson happens, the music comes with it. Three options, and couples usually mix them.

Your home

A Beeston terrace, a semi in Sherwood, a flat above the shops in Hockley. Move the coffee table, put your track through whatever speaker you own, and you have a rehearsal room. Playing it loudly at home is half the practice.

Your venue

If your venue will let us in, the sound is the reason to go. Hearing your song in the room it will be played in tells you more about timing than a month of front-room rehearsals with a phone speaker.

A hired floor

Neighbours through the wall, or a routine that needs more space than West Bridgford front rooms allow, and we book a floor near you instead. The room is arranged with the lesson, and you are told where to turn up.

06 · The reluctant

Nerves do one specific thing, and we plan for it.

Adrenaline makes people rush. Couples who were perfectly in time all month arrive at the chorus a bar early because their legs are moving faster than the record. Knowing that in advance is the fix: your instructor drills the entry slowly, marks a landmark in the music to check yourself against, and the wobble never arrives.

And if your mind goes blank anyway.

It happens, usually about four seconds in. Every routine we teach has a step you can drop into and repeat while the memory comes back, which is why the sequences are short and looped rather than long and clever. Nobody in the room has any idea it was not meant to happen.

07 · Nottingham questions

Music, nerves and the other Nottingham worries.

These come up locally. General ones about timings and lesson numbers live on the main page.

Our song runs to six minutes. Does all of it have to be played at our Nottingham reception?

Almost nobody does. In the first lesson we find the section that carries a dance, usually a minute and a half of it, and build on that. The actual edit is normally handled by your DJ or the person running your music, and we will tell you exactly where to ask them to fade.

We cannot agree on a track. Will you settle it for us?

We will give an honest opinion, which is not the same as a casting vote. Bring both. Your instructor can usually tell within a couple of plays which one has a beat you will both find, and quite often the answer surprises the person who was losing the argument.

Our song is a slow acoustic thing with barely any beat. Is that a problem?

It is a different problem, not a worse one. Songs without an obvious pulse are counted off the phrasing instead, so you move with the singer rather than a drum. It tends to suit couples who want something soft, and it looks far less rigid than dancing to a click.

A band is playing our first dance live at our Nottingham venue. Does that change the lessons?

It changes the rehearsal recording. Live versions run at their own tempo and often have an extra intro, so ask the band for a rough recording or at least a clear plan of the arrangement. Bring that to the lesson and we teach to it rather than to the studio version.

One of us goes completely blank under pressure. Can a routine survive that?

Yes, if it is built for it. Short repeating figures, a clear leader for each section and one agreed reset point mean there is always something to fall back into. The dances that go wrong are the over-ambitious ones learned in a rush, not the simple ones drilled properly.

Is a drink beforehand a good idea in Nottingham or anywhere else?

One is fine and often helps. Three is a different dance altogether, and heels plus a long dress plus three drinks is how people end up on the floor in the wrong sense. Eat something, have the one, and get it done reasonably early in the evening.
