Six boxes is all we need to get going. A person reads what you write, then a person telephones you to talk through the song, the timing and how nervous you actually are.

Would rather read the package prices before you type anything? Entirely sensible. They are a little further down.

01 · Sunderland weddings

Hardly anybody comes to this feeling ready.

The couples who ring us from Sunderland are not, on the whole, keen dancers with a shortlist of moves. They are two people who have realised the room will go quiet, the phones will come out, and neither of them has the first clue what to do with their hands. That is the normal starting point, and it is a solvable one.

Dread is a reasonable position.

Being watched by two hundred people you know is genuinely uncomfortable, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. What we can do is take away the guessing: where to stand, when to move, what happens when the second verse arrives and you have run out of ideas.

It shifts faster than you expect.

Confidence on a wedding floor is mostly repetition. Once a sequence is in your legs rather than your head, the nerves have far less to feed on. Couples who arrive at the first lesson apologising tend to spend the last one arguing about whether to add another turn.

02 · Your instructor

Your Sunderland instructor, and nobody else.

You are matched with an instructor who teaches around Wearside and spends most of their working life with beginners. Nobody observes, nobody films, and nobody else is booked into your hour.

The choreography is written for you two specifically. Your instructor listens to the track you have chosen, watches how you naturally stand together, and builds from there — which is why we have no house routine to hand out and no syllabus for you to fall behind on. If a move is not working after ten minutes, it gets replaced rather than repeated at you.

Patience is the part that matters most here. A good deal of a first lesson in Sunderland is spent simply getting two self-conscious people comfortable holding each other in daylight, and there is no rushing that. Whichever instructor covers your dates, the approach and the price are the same.

04 · Where in Sunderland

Your carpet is a perfectly good place to start.

Nearly every couple here begins at home, because privacy is the thing that makes the first hour bearable. Three settings are available and you can swap between them as the weeks go on.

Behind your own front door

Terraces in Millfield, semis in Fulwell, new builds out at Doxford Park — a cleared living room is enough to learn in. No car park, no reception desk, no chance of bumping into somebody from work on the way in.

At the venue, later on

Once the routine is safe, a session on the floor you will actually use is worth having if the venue can fit you in. Rooms are bigger than living rooms, which changes the spacing and settles a lot of last-minute worry.

A quiet room we book

If home is crowded with relatives or simply too small, we hire a floor near you for the hour instead. It is booked for your lesson alone; where it is depends on your part of Wearside and gets confirmed with you first.

06 · Honest expectations

Swaying is allowed. Aimless swaying is the problem.

Plenty of couples tell us on the phone that they only want to hold on and rotate slowly. That is a fine plan, as long as it has edges: a decided way of walking on, one change of direction so it does not look stuck, and a finish you both know is coming. Three lessons covers that comfortably.

What actually goes wrong is the first ten seconds.

Almost every wobble we see happens before the singing starts — the walk to the middle, the pause, the hand that does not know where to go. So that is what gets rehearsed hardest. Get the opening right and the rest of the song tends to look after itself.

07 · Sunderland questions

Nerves, privacy, and other Sunderland questions.

Local worries here. General ones — timings, songs, shoes — live on the main page.

One of us is genuinely dreading this. Will a lesson make it worse?

Usually the opposite, and quickly. Dread thrives on the unknown, so an hour in which somebody shows you precisely what you will be doing tends to shrink it. Your instructor will start with the least exposing thing in the room, which is normally walking, and build from there. Nobody is asked to perform anything in front of anyone.

Can the whole thing happen at our house in Sunderland, from first lesson to last?

Yes, and a large share of couples here do exactly that. Front rooms are where most of our teaching happens, and a routine built to fit your carpet will fit a bigger floor without trouble. The only thing worth adding, if the venue allows it, is one session in the real room so the scale is not a surprise.

Will anyone else be there while we learn at home in Sunderland?

Only whoever you invite. It is your instructor and the two of you, in a room of your choosing, with the curtains shut if that helps. We do not bring observers, we do not record lessons, and nothing about your booking goes anywhere near social media.

What happens if we forget the whole routine when the music starts?

It is built so you cannot really lose it. The steps repeat, the entry points come round again, and your instructor will drill a way back in from wherever you have landed. Add to that the fact that no guest knows what was meant to happen next, and a forgotten section is invisible to everybody but you.

How much practising are you expecting us to do between lessons?

Less than you fear, and more than none. Ten minutes twice a week in the kitchen does more good than an hour the night before, mostly because the body needs repetition rather than duration. If you are honest that you will not practise at all, say so and the routine will be built accordingly.

Can we keep it a surprise until the wedding day itself?

Easily, and many Sunderland couples do. Teaching at home behind your own door is the discreet option, and we will not mention your booking to anybody. If relatives are in and out of the house, a hired room for the hour keeps it quieter still.
