01 · Dundee weddings

Learning it at home, where nobody can see.

The single most common request we get in Dundee is a private one: teach us, but do it in the house, and do not make us walk into a studio full of people who can already dance. That is the normal way we work anyway.

Your living room is enough.

A cleared patch roughly the size of a hearthrug is where most couples start, and it is plenty for the early work. Lessons happen with the door shut, the music low and no audience beyond a mildly interested cat. Whether anyone else finds out about them is entirely your business.

Small is a legitimate ambition.

Not everybody wants a routine. A good number of couples here want a sway that does not look like two people bracing against a gale, which is a real thing to teach and a satisfying one. It takes shape, timing and a decision about how it ends.

02 · Your instructor

The person who will be in your front room.

Dundee enquiries are matched with an instructor who already covers Tayside, so you are not paying in time for somebody's long drive from elsewhere.

It is the same instructor each time, which matters more than people expect when the lessons happen at home. They compose your routine themselves, from your song and from what the two of you can comfortably do, and they scale it to the space you actually have rather than an imaginary ballroom.

Where another of our instructors is the one available for your dates, nothing changes in cost or method. Every one of them writes their own material for the couple in front of them.

04 · Where in Dundee

Mostly your house. Sometimes not.

Three options, and the first is by far the most popular here.

Your home

Flats in the West End, terraces in Stobswell and Lochee, houses along the road to Broughty Ferry and Barnhill. Push the table towards the wall, roll the rug and there is a floor. Nobody arrives in a leotard; it is two people and a teacher.

Your venue

Hotels on the waterfront, halls out towards Angus, a country house with a view over the Tay. If the staff can spare the room for an hour, one rehearsal there tells you how far the walk to the middle really is.

A hired floor

Useful when the house is busy, the ceiling is low or the routine has grown legs. We take a hall somewhere convenient and meet you there. It is arranged when the lesson is booked, so you never have to organise it.

06 · Keeping it small

A sway with shape is a proper answer.

There is nothing second-best about the minimal version. Give the swaying a defined hold, one turn placed where the song opens out, and an ending you both know is coming, and it stops looking like two people waiting for the music to stop. Guests read it as ease. It is a modest amount of teaching for a large amount of relief.

Practice belongs in the kitchen.

Ten minutes between lessons does more than an hour the night before. Most couples run through it while the kettle boils, in socks, without the music on. That is the point of learning at home in the first place: the practice floor and the lesson floor are the same floor.

07 · Dundee questions

Learning at home, asked and answered.

The local, practical ones live here. General queries are covered on the main page.

We would rather nobody knew we had lessons at all. Is that possible?

Entirely. Lessons at home are between the three people in the room, we do not publish who we teach, and nothing is posted anywhere. If even a car outside the house feels conspicuous, a hired hall on the other side of Dundee keeps it further from the neighbours.

What actually needs moving before the instructor arrives?

Less than you fear. A coffee table shifted, a rug rolled back, and a lamp moved out of elbow range is usually the whole job. Your instructor will tell you after the first visit whether anything else is worth clearing, and low ceilings are only an issue if you were planning lifts.

Can we just learn a sway with a bit of shape to it?

Yes, and it is a common request in Dundee. What we add to a sway is a hold that photographs well, a change of direction so it is not one movement on repeat, and a definite ending. It is far less work than a routine and it removes the awkwardness, which was the actual complaint.

How short can a first dance reasonably be?

Around a minute and a half is comfortable, and shorter has been done many times without anyone minding. Cutting the track early and inviting the room up is a perfectly good ending. Tell whoever handles the music where the fade should fall and rehearse to that version.

Do we need to practise between lessons?

Ten minutes here and there will do it. Couples who run through the sequence twice a week arrive at the next lesson ready to build on it; couples who do nothing spend the first quarter of an hour catching up. Neither is a disaster, but one gets you further for the same money.

The house is never empty. Can lessons happen with family about?

They can, though most people prefer otherwise. Teenagers drifting through with opinions is a slower way to learn than a shut door. If timing the house being quiet proves impossible, we move that lesson to a booked hall and the price stays the same.

We live at Monifieth rather than in the city. Is that still covered?

It is, along with Broughty Ferry, Carnoustie, Newport-on-Tay, Arbroath and the Angus villages. Travel around Dundee and Tayside is included in the package prices. Anything further out gets an honest answer when you enquire rather than a surcharge afterwards.
