Six boxes, and that is the lot. Somebody here reads every one of them, then telephones you to sort out dates, songs and where the teaching ought to happen.

01 · Preston weddings

Preston couples marry in every kind of room.

A routine that suits a hotel ballroom with a sprung floor will not survive a marquee pitched on a lawn above the Ribble. So nothing gets choreographed until we know where the two of you will be standing.

Lancashire rarely follows the brochure.

Some couples take a Georgian room near Winckley Square. Some take over a barn out past Longridge. Plenty do the register office and then a long, loud afternoon in a function room at Bamber Bridge. The dance has to work in whichever of those you have chosen.

So it is built around your evening.

Your instructor asks about the song, the surface, the dress and the shoes before setting a single step. What comes back was written for the two of you, rather than adapted from somebody else's wedding last summer.

02 · Your instructor

One choreographer, matched to Preston.

You are put with an instructor who already covers this part of Lancashire: someone who has taught in Preston front rooms, in village halls out towards Garstang, and in function rooms with pillars in inconvenient places.

Whoever you are matched with choreographs your first dance themselves, starting from the track you send over. There is no house routine sitting in a folder waiting to be handed out, which is exactly why nobody can tell you the steps before they have heard the song.

They also travel to you every time. That means no drive across town after work in January, no hunting for a parking space on a wet Tuesday, and no sitting in the car waiting for somebody else's class to finish.

Where the diary allows it, you keep the same instructor from the first lesson to the last, so nothing has to be explained twice.

03 · Preston prices

What a Preston first dance costs, set out in figures.

Identical to every other town we teach in: five packages, five figures, charged per couple rather than per person. Nothing here changes because your postcode happens to begin PR.

Each figure covers both of you and covers the teaching itself, wherever we meet: your house, your reception room, or a floor booked for the hour. If you reach the end of a package and want one more session, that is easily arranged.

Learning it is the straightforward part. Getting started is two minutes of typing.

04 · Where in Preston

Three floors, all of them private.

Nobody watches a first dance lesson unless you have invited them to. That holds wherever in Preston the teaching happens, and most couples use more than one of these before the wedding.

Your home

A semi in Fulwood, a terrace in Deepdale, a new build out at Cottam. The room only has to be wide enough to walk four steps across and turn. Curtains shut, your own kettle, nobody any the wiser.

Your venue

An hour on the actual floor, where the venue can spare it, is worth two lessons held anywhere else. Couples in Preston tend to save that one for the last week before the day.

A hired floor

When the front room genuinely will not do it, we take a hall or studio floor and meet you there instead. The building is chosen once we know your side of the city, and confirmed to you before the lesson.

05 · Coverage

Wedding Dance Preston — the city, and a good stretch of Lancashire besides.

Fulwood, Penwortham, Ashton-on-Ribble, Ribbleton, Ingol, Cottam, Broughton and Walton-le-Dale, then outwards to Leyland, Bamber Bridge, Chorley, Longridge, Kirkham and Garstang. If your village is not on that list but sits close to it, ask anyway.

06 · Privately, and in good time

The two of you, and nobody else in the room.

Most Preston couples who ring are not worried about the steps. They are worried about being seen learning them. Which is why there is no group class to join, no studio window for the neighbours to walk past, and no footage of anybody's rehearsal on this website. What happens in your front room stays a surprise until the evening itself.

A February wedding and a July one need different plans.

Winter run-ups are quieter and easier to book into. Summer ones get eaten alive by holidays, hen weekends and other people's weddings. Tell us which of the two you are facing and the lessons are spread to suit it, rather than crammed into whichever fortnight happens to survive.

07 · Preston questions

The questions Preston couples ask first.

Local ones here. Songs, shoes and how many lessons anybody needs are dealt with on the main page.

Can we keep the lessons secret until the wedding itself?

Yes, and a fair number of Preston couples do exactly that. Sessions are private, no rehearsal footage of anyone appears on this site, and nothing is announced on your behalf. The only people who need to know are the two of you and whoever is teaching.

Will the neighbours hear the music through the wall?

In a Preston terrace, a little. But a first dance is built on counts long before it is built on volume, so early lessons are usually taught with the music low and the counting out loud. If the walls are thin enough to worry about, we move that session to a hired floor and carry on there.

We are marrying in December. Is a winter run-up harder work?

Not harder, just different. Diaries are freer between January and March than they are in June, so winter couples generally get the spacing they ask for. The one thing worth planning for is the weather: if a night turns nasty, tell your instructor and a new date gets found.

Our wedding is in August and half of Preston seems to be away. When do we ask?

Early, even if the song is still undecided. Summer dates get spoken for first, so a conversation now costs nothing and lets us pencil in a shape for the run-up. The exact dates can be fixed later, once your own diary stops moving.

Do we have to tidy the house before the instructor arrives?

No. Push the coffee table towards the wall and the preparation is finished. Lessons have been taught around Christmas trees, drying racks and a dog asleep in the middle of the rug, and none of it has stopped a routine yet.

We live in Preston but the wedding is out in the Ribble Valley. Does that work?

It does, and it is common. The learning happens at home in the city, and if the venue will let us in you finish with one session on the real floor. Where that venue sits inside the area your instructor covers, the lesson is priced like any other in the package.

One of us works shifts. Can the lessons move around them?

Usually. Send the pattern rather than a single free evening and your instructor will work with it. Nobody can promise a particular night before the diary has been checked, but shift work is thoroughly normal here and it rarely stops anything.
